Client Profile – Suzanne Oakes, Business Furniture

Suzanne Oakes, Business Furniture

We recently reached out to Suzanne Oakes from Business Furniture to get their insight on mentoring. Suzanne is the VP of Human Resources and Administration, and she offered some of her thoughts on her own mentoring experiences as well as the upcoming mentoring engagements for the Business Furniture employees.

DTS: WHY DID YOUR COMPANY DECIDE TO OFFER THE TALENT NEXUS MENTORING PROGRAM TO YOUR EMPLOYEES?

SO: We decided to offer the program because we are a smaller business and very tight knit. While there is a healthy balance of older to younger employees, there are simply not enough of us to have a variety of mentors to choose from. We also feel that offering outside mentors means that our employees will be exposed to ideas and mindsets that they wouldn’t normally find inside the company.

DTS: WHAT ARE YOU HOPING TO ACCOMPLISH WITH YOUR MENTORING PROGRAM?

SO: I am hoping that individuals in the program will connect with a mentor who will help them to develop their skills, or encourage them to tackle the next hurdle. I also hope that they will consider being mentors themselves. There is so much to learn by connecting with other people.

DTS: WAS THERE A MENTOR WHO HAS BEEN PARTICULARLY INFLUENTIAL IN YOUR CAREER? TELL ME ABOUT THEM.

SO: I am fortunate to have had the experience of working with a couple executive coaches. They have helped me recognize my own role and power in shaping the outcome of my life and my career. I am also fortunate to have parents who have been extremely successful in both of their careers. My father is a business person and has taught me about taking risk, leveraging my strengths and picking myself up when I stumble. My mom is a sociologist and I’ve witnessed the long term payoff of her consistent diligence and moral high ground. When people think of her, they always think of integrity, dignity and value.

DTS: WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR EXPERIENCE SO FAR WORKING WITH DTS TO BRING MENTORING TO YOUR COMPANY?

SO: So far, it has been great. It’s only been a couple of months but it seems very organized and that there is someone to help when an employee needs assistance in the system. I am excited to be working with DTS.
