Last year, we launched the Emerging Leaders program to allow individuals to participate outside of a company. One of our first Emerging Leaders was Carmen Dumaual. Carmen is currently a manager in regulatory operations at Elanco Animal Health, where she has responsibility for leading two different geographically dispersed teams, based in and providing support to multiple regions around the world. Previously, she spent 4 years as a manager at Eli Lilly and Company where she led a large team of scientific writers with diverse responsibilities and backgrounds.
DTS: WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO SIGN UP FOR THE MENTORING CIRCLES PROGRAM?
CD:I was interested in connecting with and learning from people outside of my immediate organization, and I was searching for opportunities to gain additional perspectives.
DTS: WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE FEATURE IN OUR PROGRAM?
CD: I love the diversity in the people you can connect with and learn from. I also really like the workshops; they’re informative and are really good about asking questions to understand what we want and need from a mentor so we can recognize what we should be looking for.
DTS: HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED ANY ESPECIALLY EXCELLENT MENTORS OR MENTEES? WHAT MADE THEM SPECIAL?
CD: Yes, I had one mentor in particular who had a great outlook and gave particularly good advice. She really filled in the areas where I have gaps and room for growth. And she’s been good about giving me useful approaches for tackling issues I have faced with my team.
DTS: ARE THERE ANY PERSONAL SUCCESSES YOU’RE PROUD OF?
CD: I’ve become a mentor myself. I had mentored before in an unofficial setting, but now it’s formal. I’ve learned a lot from the people that I’m mentoring and I enjoy getting to work with their issues and seeing things from their perspectives.
